Mika Kares: A Standout at the Bayreuth Festival
Finnish bass Mika Kares made a powerful impression at this summer’s Bayreuth Festival, taking on four major Wagnerian roles across Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Götterdämmerung, and Der fliegende Holländer.
Performing as Fasolt, Hunding, Hagen, and Daland, Kares brought his commanding artistry and vocal versatility to some of Wagner’s most demanding bass roles. Across the season, his performances demonstrated both the breadth of his voice and his profound command of the Wagnerian repertoire.
His portrayal of Hagen in particular drew praise from concerti.de, which wrote:
“Ein Ereignis ist Mika Kares als Hagen: Er muss den Bass-Bösewicht nicht brüllen, er singt ihn einfach so wohltönend wie herrisch.”
“Mika Kares as Hagen is a standout: He doesn’t need to bellow as the bass villain; he simply sings the part with a voice that is as melodious as it is commanding.”
With four contrasting roles spanning the Wagner canon, Kares’ Bayreuth season highlighted the remarkable range and depth of one of today’s leading bass voices.
