Biography

Following his studies at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and at Western Illinois University, the tenor was employed by the Seattle Opera, the Virginia Opera, the Portland Opera and the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. In 2014, Furman was one of nine finalists at the International Wagner Singing Competition and was also honoured with the New York City Wagner Society Prize in the same year. His career in Europe began with his debut as Anatol in "Vanessa" at the Theater Hagen, which was followed by further debuts as the Mayor in "Friedenstag" and Apollo in "Daphne" with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra under the musical direction of Zoltán Kocsis. In the 2015/16 season, Furman was engaged at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, where he sang Dimitri in "Boris Godunov", Alvaro in "La forza del destino", Rodolfo in "La Bohème", Cavaradossi in "Tosca", Pollione in "Norma", Kaiser in "Die Frau ohne Schatten" and Siegmund in "Die Walküre", expanding his Wagner and Strauss repertoire in particular. He then worked mainly as a freelancer.  The tenor made his debut at the Theater Magdeburg in 2017 as the Prince in "Rusalka" and returned there in autumn 2018 for roles as Siegmund and Anatol. After great success as Erik in "Der fliegende Holländer" at the 2018 Budapest Wagner Festival, a role as Boris in "Katja Kabanova" led him to the Scottish Opera in Glasglow. In the 19/20 season, Furman performed the tenor role in Mahler's 8th Symphony with the Orchestre National de Lille and appeared as Bacchus in "Ariadne auf Naxos" in Weimar and as Matteo in "Arabella" in Leipzig. He also appeared as Augustin Moser at the 2021 Bayreuther Festspiele and as Hoffmann in "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" at the Komische Oper Berlin in 2022.
In the 22/23 season, Furman made his debut as Peter Grimes at the Theater Magdeburg and shortly afterwards also performed this role in productions at the Staatstheater Augsburg. Later that year, the tenor also toured the UK as Bacchus in "Ariadne auf Naxos" with Opera North.
Highlights of this season include the new production of "Die Walküre" at the Theater Basel conducted by Jonathan Nott and directed by Benedikt von Peter, his role as Florestan in "Fidelio" in Bari, as well as two semi-concert performances of "Die Walküre" conducted by Kent Nagano at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Kölner Philharmonie.
