Biography
The young Italian soprano Mariam Suleiman graduated with top marks from the Santa Cecilia Conservatoire in Rome under the guidance of Virna Sforza. In 2023/24 she joined the Fabbrica Young Artists Program at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, performing the title role in Viardot’s Cendrillon and taking part in international tours in Tokyo and for Expo Osaka 2025. She won the 4th edition of Voci in Barcaccia (Rai Radio 3) and was a finalist in major international competitions including the 12th Stanislaw Moniuszko Competition, and the Renata Tebaldi Competition, where she received three special awards.In 2025/26 she was an Emerging Artist at Mascarade Opera Foundation in Florence. She performed the title role at Reate Festival 2025 in the modern premiere of Salieri’s La Partenza Inaspettata, of which a live DVD will be released by Decca Records.
In 2026 she appeared in the world premiere of Silvia Colasanti’s Sacred Goddess Mother Earth with La Toscanini, in Stabat Mater (Pergolesi) with Fondazione Haydn, in the Mascarade Opera Programme’s orchestral gala ‘Young Voices in Parma’ with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, and in ‘Villa Belcanto’ at Teatro Regio di Parma, a production of the Mascarade Opera Programme and the New Generation Foundation featuring a cast of emerging young artists and music by Donizetti, Tchaikovsky, Handel and others, and directed by Federico Grazzini with the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna conducted by Wyn Davies.
In the summer 2026, Mariam is part of the Young Singers Project at the prestigious Salzburg Festival where she will perform the role of Oswaldine in the world premiere of the children’s opera King Arthur Junior (Gordon Kampe /Purcell).
From season 2026/27 she will join the International Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zürich.
During this season, Mariam is also a Maria Manetti Shrem artist.

From Bayreuth to Bregenz
First stop: Bayreuth. One of the highlights of the festival will undoubtedly be the first and only planned run of “Rienzi”. Andreas Schager will sing the title role, with Andreas Bauer Kanabas as Stefano Colonna at his side.Andreas Schager will also return to the Green Hill as Parsifal.
Mika Kares will be appearing in a wide range of roles this year. Not only will he be seen as Fasolt in "Rheingold", but he will also take to the stage as the sinister Hunding in Wagner’s “Die Walküre” (The Valkyrie). Joining him on stage will be Alexandra Ionis as Siegrune and, making her debut, Martina Welschenbach as Gerhilde. Two further major roles await Mika Kares – Hagen in "Götterdämmerung" and Daland in "Der fliegende Holländer".
Alongside Mika Kares in "Götterdämmerung", Alexandra Ionis will also sing the role of the Second Norn and, as Fricka in the children’s version of "Der Ring des Nibelungen", she will enchant young audiences.
Next stop: Bregenz. Marjukka Tepponen returns to the Seebühne – this time in one of opera’s most iconic roles – Violetta in the new production of Verdi’s "La Traviata". Alongside her, Kevin Greenlaw will appear as Baron Douphol in the production.
Next up is the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Here, both Iris Candelaria and Sonja Herranen will be making their role debuts in Mozart’s "Le Nozze di Figaro". Iris Candelaria sings Susanna and Sonja Herranen sings the Countess Almaviva.
Last but not least: the Salzburg Festival. Mariam Suleiman will be appearing there for the first time as part of the Young Singers Project in a new production of the opera "King Arthur Junior". Anthony Robin Schneider returns to the Salzach this year as Colonel Kottwitz in the concert performance of Hans Werner Henze’s "Der Prinz von Homburg".

We are delighted to welcome young Italian soprano Mariam Suleiman to our roster!Between 2025 and 2026, Mariam was a member of Mascarade Opera, and in the upcoming season she will join the International Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zürich.
Previously, from 2022 to 2024, she was selected for “Fabbrica” Young Artists Program at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, working closely with renowned conductors and directors such as Michele Mariotti, Juraj Valčuha, Claus Guth, and Lorenzo Mariani. During her time with the program, she appeared in numerous productions as a soloist, including the title role in Viardot’s Cenerentola, and joined the company on international tours to Tokyo, Osaka, and New York.
Mariam is the winner of the 4th edition of “Voci in Barcaccia – Largo ai Giovani” on Rai Radio 3 and a finalist in several prestigious international competitions. At Neue Stimmen 2024, she was awarded the Talent Development Prize – Mascarade Talent Pathway. She was also a finalist at the International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition 2025 and at the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition in San Marino, where she received three special prizes: Emerging Young Talent, Youngest Finalist, and the Angelo Mariani Association Prize.
Among her recent highlights is her return to the Reate Festival, where she performed in the modern premiere of La Partenza Inaspettata by Antonio Salieri, of which a live DVD will be released by Decca Records.
