Biography

American baritone Kevin Greenlaw recently starred as the Phantom in a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's worldwide sensation The Phantom of the Opera with the Finnish National Opera. The Phantom has become the role he's most well known for within the Nordics after completing three wildly successful seasons.  Additionally, he appeared as Raoul in Love Never Dies, Webber's sequel to the Phantom, also with the Finnish National Opera. Within the realm of operetta and light opera his credits include Danilo in Lehàr's Die lustige Witwe with Opéra National de Lorraine, and Henry Higgins in Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady in Brazil with Música em Trancoso.  Greenlaw performed with the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company throughout the UK in roles such as Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. Pinafore, Giuseppe in The Gondoliers and Pish-Tush in The Mikado.

Born into a musical family, Greenlaw has performed throughout the world in a wide variety of repertoire stretching from early baroque all the way towards contemporary.  He began his vocal training at the Eastman School of Music in New York and subsequently moved to Europe where he completed his Masters degree in Glasgow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and later entered the ensemble of the prestigious Paris National Opera.  In 2021, Rijeka Opera of the Ivan Zajc Croatian National Theatre awarded him the Enrico Caruso Award for best achievement by a guest artist for his portrayal of Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata.

Following five years of singing regularly with the Paris National Opera, he joined the ensemble of Theater Dortmund, where he debuted in several landmark baritone roles such as Il Conte in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Marcello in Puccini’s La Bohème, and the title roles in both Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

In 2019 he achieved critical acclaim for his portrayal of the iconic title role, Hamlet, by the French composer Ambroise Thomas with Angers-Nantes Opera.  He is also known for his performances of Oreste in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride with Komische Oper Berlin and Opéra National de Lorraine, and as Pelléas at Glyndebourne, Opéra National de Lorraine, Opéra de Rennes and as a cover with the Metropolitan Opera as well as Chorèbe in Berlioz’s Les Troyens with the Festival Amazonas de Ópera in Manaus, Brazil, Figaro in Rossini’s Il Barbière di Siviglia with Opera Angers-Nantes, Escamillo in London at the Royal Albert Hall, and Il Conte with Theater St. Gallen, among many others.

Since 2016, Greenlaw has made his home in Helsinki. In addition to his successful Phantom with the FNO, he has appeared as a guest soloist with many prestigious orchestras such as the Tampere Philharmonic, Turku Philharmonic, and Jyväskylä Sinfonia with conductors such as Leif Segerstam, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Jaakko Kuusisto and Ville Matvejeff and has particularly enjoyed singing the monumental part of Kullervo in Sibelius’ Kullervo Symphony in Tampere and later in Bilbao.

From Bayreuth to Bregenz

First stop: Bayreuth. One of the highlights of the festival will undoubtedly be the first and only planned run of “Rienzi”. Andreas Schager will sing the title role, with Andreas Bauer Kanabas as Stefano Colonna at his side.
Andreas Schager will also return to the Green Hill as Parsifal.

Mika Kares will be appearing in a wide range of roles this year. Not only will he be seen as Fasolt in "Rheingold", but he will also take to the stage as the sinister Hunding in Wagner’s “Die Walküre” (The Valkyrie). Joining him on stage will be Alexandra Ionis as Siegrune and, making her debut, Martina Welschenbach as Gerhilde. Two further major roles await Mika Kares – Hagen in "Götterdämmerung" and Daland in "Der fliegende Holländer".  

Alongside Mika Kares in "Götterdämmerung", Alexandra Ionis will also sing the role of the Second Norn and, as Fricka in the children’s version of "Der Ring des Nibelungen", she will enchant young audiences.
 
Next stop: Bregenz. Marjukka Tepponen returns to the Seebühne – this time in one of opera’s most iconic roles – Violetta in the new production of Verdi’s "La Traviata". Alongside her, Kevin Greenlaw will appear as Baron Douphol in the production.

Next up is the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Here, both Iris Candelaria and Sonja Herranen will be making their role debuts in Mozart’s "Le Nozze di Figaro". Iris Candelaria plays Susanna and Sonja Herranen sings the Countess Almaviva.

Last but not least: the Salzburg Festival. Mariam Suleiman will be appearing there for the first time as part of the Young Singers Project in a new production of the opera "King Arthur". Anthony Robin Schneider returns to the Salzach this year as Colonel Kottwitz in the concert performance of Hans Werner Henze’s "Der Prinz von Homburg".
