Biography
Johan Reuter studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Academy of the Royal Theatre in his hometown of Copenhagen. He frequented masterclasses of Ernst Haefliger, Anthony Rolfe-Johnson and Richard Trimborn. Since 1996 he has been a soloist of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, where he sings a large repertoire.In the 2022/23 season Reuter will take on the role of Orest from Elektra at the Royal Theatre Copenhagen, Barak from Die Frau ohne Schatten at San Francisco Opera and Friedrich von Telramund from Lohengrin at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, among others.
In season 21/22 he made his much anticipated return to the Opéra National de Paris, after almost two decades absence, collaborating once again with stage director William Kentridge - this time in Wozzeck. He starred in the new production of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg as Hans Sachs at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Johan was part of the exciting line-up to celebrate the Centennial of San Francisco Opera, making his first appearance on the West Coast with Die Frau ohne Schatten.
Highlights from the past seasons include Dead Man Walking, Un ballo in maschera, Cavalleria rusticana/I pagliacci, Scarpia in Tosca [all marking his debut in the roles] in Copenhagen, Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten in London, New York, Berlin, Zürich and Amsterdam, the title role of Nabucco at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Braunfels' Jeanne d'Arc at the Salzburg Festival, Vec Makropulos at the Met and the Salzburg Festival, Wotan in Das Rheingold in Munich and Budapest. He created the role of Theseus in the world première of Harrison Birthwistle's The Minotaur at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden where he has also appeared in Elektra, Salome, Wozzeck and The Tsar's Bride. Der fliegende Holländer in Madrid, Berlin and Copenhagen, Le nozze di Figaro at Theater an der Wien and Deutsche Oper Berlin, Macbeth in Lisbon, From the House of the Dead in Paris and Madrid and Così fan tutte in Hamburg.
Recent concert appearances include Haydn's Schöpfung and Die Jahreszeiten, Mahler's 8th Symphony, Rückert lieder and Das klagende Lied, Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Brahm's Vier ernste Gesänge, Ein deutsches Requiem, Mozart's Requiem, Berlioz's Romeo et Juliette, Peer Gynt and Michelangelo sonnets by Shostakovich.
He has given song recitals in Copenhagen, Hannover, Frankfurt, Bergen and Madrid.
Johan Reuter recorded Tristan und Isolde under Janowski, Kunzen's Holger Danske, Nielsen's Maskarade under Ulf Schirmer (Gramophone Award), Schubert's Winterreise in Danish as well as solo albums with arias by the young Giuseppe Verdi and songs by Richard Strauss, Carl Nielsen and Hakon Børresen.

Budapest or Bayreuth
Off to Budapest, because as the New York Times reported back in 2013: "No Tickets for Bayreuth? Budapest has a Wagner Festival, Too." And Wagner fans shouldn't miss it, especially this year! From the 20th June 2024, visitors can look forward to a complete performance Ring des Nibelungen, with Danish bass-baritone Johan Reuter portraying Wotan/Wanderer in the first three parts. He will be joined by Irene Theorin /Brünnhilde, Magnus Vigilius /Siegmund and Stefan Vinke/Siegfried. Under the musical direction of Ádám Fischer, highly esteemed for his interpretation of Wagner's works, and directed by Hartmut Schörghofer, the audience is sure to fall under the spell of the Nibelungen-Ring.

In Baden-Baden and the Philharmonie with the Berlin Philharmonic
Following successful performances of the Danish national opera Drog et Marsk at the Royal Danish Opera, Johann Reuter's next engagement will be at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden as part of the Easter Festival.
From 23 March 2024, he can be heard there as Orest in a new production of Strauss' Elektra together with the Berliner Philharmoniker and alongside Alexandra Ionis, Anthony Robin Schneider, Andrew Harris and Nina Stemme in the title role. Following the staged performances directed by Philipp Stölzl and Philipp M. Krenn in Baden-Baden, Kirill Petrenko will also conduct a concert version of the piece in two performances at the Berliner Philharmonie from 4th of April 2024.

Debut at the Ruhrtriennale
Johan faces an exciting season with many different challenges. It begins at the Ruhrtriennale, where he takes on the role of Alexandr Petrovič Gorjančikov in Janacek’s masterpiece “From the House of the Dead” under the musical direction of Dennis Russell Davies. Performances of this eagerly awaited new production by Dmitri Tcherniakov are on August 31st and on September 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th and 9th, all taking place at the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum.
