Biography

Iris Candelaria is a Finnish/Spanish soprano who graduated from the Sibelius Academy Opera program under the tutelage of Annika Ollinkari in 2022.
Her opera roles in the Sibelius Academy's opera program include Suzel in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, The Bear in Uljas Pulkkis' All the Truths We Cannot See: A Chernobyl Story, Despina in Mozart's Così fan tutte, Miss Wordsworth in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring and Servilia in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito.

Iris won the 1st prize in the prestigious Timo Mustakallio competition (2019), the audience award in the Havets röst competition (2021), as well as 1st prize and the audience award at the Lappeenranta singing competition (2023).

In 2022, she sang Queen of the Night/The Magic Flute at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki and in 2023 she was chosen for the Finnish National Opera's new Young Singers' Programme for the following two seasons, beginning with the season 2023/24. Her roles at the FNO include Valencienne/Die lustige Witwe, Zerlina/Don Giovanni, Adele/Die Fledermaus, Constance/Dialogues des Carmélites, and Voce dal Cielo/Don Carlo.

In addition, she performed the roles of Pamina/Magic Flute and Zerlina/Don Giovanni at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

In season 2024/25, further to her many projects in Helsinki, Iris can be experienced as Antigone in Enescu’s Oedipe at the Bregenz Festival and as a soloist at Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s New Year’s concert on New Year’s Eve.

BOM artists announced at Savonlinna Opera Festival!
To our great delight, this year's Savonlinna Opera Festival again features several BOM artists in central roles!

From July 5th, for the first time ever, Tuomas Katajala can be seen and heard as Lohengrin in Roman Hovenbitzer's new production under the baton of Stephan Zilias.
All performance dates: 05/09/12/15/18 July 2024

From July 6th, the audience can then experience Rodula Gaitanou's staging of Verdi's Nabucco, featuring Mika Kares as Zaccaria and Johan Krogius with his debut as Ismaele. The production is conducted by Ville Matvejeff and James Sherlock.

Likewise, the casts of Don Giovanni, starting on July 10th, feature some familiar names!
The role of Commendatore is sung by Mika Kares, Don Ottavio by Johan Krogius, Donna Anna by Marjukka Tepponen, Donna Elvira by Sonja Herranen, and Zerlina by Iris Candelaria. The production by Paul-Émile Fourny is conducted by Andrea Sanguineti.
