Biography
Baritone Ilya Silchuk was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, in 1993. He studied acting at the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute in Moscow and then spent two years at the Vakhtangov Theatre and the Theatre of Film Artists in Moscow. His roles included Prince Nechljudov in Tolstoy's Resurrection and the notary Andrei Ilyich in Chekhov's A Misfortune.From 2018 to 2024, he studied singing in Jörg Hempel's class at the Dresden University of Music. He played the role of Spinelloccio in a university production of G. Puccini's opera Gianni Schicchi in 2019. Also in 2019, he won second prize in the Bachelor category at the Giulio Perotti International Singing Competition.
In 2020, Ilya Silchuk won the International Wagner Competition for Young Artists in Leipzig and also received a Bayreuth scholarship. In addition, he became a scholarship holder of the Ad Infinitum Fondation Lübeck in 2020. In 2021, he took on the role of Figaro in W.A. Mozart's opera Le nozze di Figaro in a PAMY Media production (Dornach, Switzerland).
In 2021, he also won a special prize from the Saxon State Opera Dresden at the Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition in Erfurt.
From 2021 to 2023, he was a member of the Young Ensemble of the Semperoper Dresden, and in the 2023/2024 season, he was part of the soloist ensemble of the Saxon State Opera Dresden. Among other roles, he has performed in Schaunard (‘La Boheme’), Papageno (‘The Magic Flute’), Kilian (‘Der Freischütz’), Kuligin (‘Katya Kabanova’) and Herrmann/Schlemil (‘The Tales of Hoffmann’).
Ilya Silchuk has won several international singing competitions. Among other awards, he received third prize at the Concorso Lirico Internazionale di Portofino in Italy in 2022. In 2023, he won first prize at the Hamel Opera Competition in Hanover.
In the summer of 2024, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as the First Gravedigger in Hamlet by A. Thomas.
Since September 2024, he has been a member of the ensemble at the German National Theatre in Weimar, where he can be seen as Dandini (La Cenerentola), Papageno (The Magic Flute), Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Albert (Werther), Peter (Hansel and Gretel), Baron Douphol (La Traviata), Marco (Gianni Schicchi) and others.
