Biography
Born in Merano, Südtirol (Italy), Edith Haller studied vocal performance at the Salzburg Mozarteum. During her studies she received her first operatic engagements in Italy, the Czech Republic and Slovenia. In 2003, Ms Haller first gained international acclaim when she won the “Mario Lanza Vocal Competition” in Filignano, Italy.Joining the soloist ensemble at Theater St. Gallen in 2002, Ms. Haller had many successes there through 2005 with debuts in both lyric and jugendlich dramatischen repertoire including Tatyana/ Eugene Onegin, Desdemona/Otello and Sylva Varescu/Csárdásfürstin. From 2005-2009, as a member of the Badische Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, she began focusing on the German repertoire. In roles such as Sieglinde/Die Walküre and Senta/Der fliegende Holländer, Edith Haller was particularly successful in thrilling audiences and critics alike.
Ms. Haller attracted international attention in her debut at the Bayreuth Festival, when she was entrusted with four roles of the Ring Cycle: Freia, Helmwige, third Norn and Gutrune. Afterwards, she was invited to return to the Bayreuth Festival to sing the roles of Sieglinde/Die Walküre in 2010 and Elsa/Lohengrin in 2014.
Her success in these engagements was followed by numerous invitations to the most renowned houses and festivals worldwide such as the Metropolitan Opera New York, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Staatsoper Hamburg, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Den Norske Opera, Opernhaus Zurich, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro Real Madrid, New National Theatre Tokyo, as well as the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals.
In addition to the Wagner roles of Eva, Elsa, Elisabeth, Senta and Sieglinde, Edith Haller added Chrysothemis/Elektra, Ariadne/Ariadne auf Naxos, Leonore/Fidelio, Marie/Wozzeck, Ursula/Mathis der Maler, and Ellen Orford/Peter Grimes to her repertoire. Since 2013, Ms. Haller has been adding highly dramatic roles to her resume, such as Isolde/ Tristan und Isolde at Theater Lübeck and at Kolobov Novaya Opera of Moscow, as well as Brünnhilde/ Die Walküre at Oper Leipzig.
She is a sought-after concert singer performing with orchestras, such as the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Hilversum.
Edith Haller has worked with conductors, such as, Christian Thielemann, Philipp Jordan, Adam Fischer, Marek Janowski, Zubin Mehta, Andris Nelson, Jesus Lopez Cobos, Riccardo Muti, Michael Schoenwand, Maurizio Barbacini, Jiri Kout, Ingo Metzmacher, Simone Young, and Constantin Trinks, and with directors like Graham Vick, Ian Judge, Tankred Dorst, Franziska Severin, Josef Köpplinger, Antony Pilavacchi, Clau Guth, Günter Krämer, Dieter Dorn, Giancarlo Del Monaco, and Philippe Arlaud.
