Biography

The Finnish tenor Dan Karlström studied in Helsinki and later worked with Herbert Brauer in Berlin and in masterclasses with Jaakko Ryhänen, Tom Krause and Elisabeth Werres, among others.

After his first permanent engagements in Wuppertal and Darmstadt, he has been a permanent member of the Leipzig Opera ensemble since 2001, where he has performed roles such as Mime/Der Ring des Nibelungen, David/Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Steuermann/The Flying Dutchman, Luzio/Das Liebesverbot, Knusperhexe/Hansel and Gretel, Monostatos/The Magic Flute, Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Prince/Lulu, Spoletta/Tosca, Pong/Turandot, Goro/Madama Butterfly and Hunter/Rusalka.

His extensive repertoire includes numerous roles from opera, operetta and musicals.

Guest engagements have taken him to renowned theatres such as the Semperoper Dresden (Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Goro/Madama Butterfly), Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin (Spoletta/Tosca, Wirt/Der Rosenkavalier, Harry/La fanciulla del West), Komische Oper Berlin, the Chemnitz Theatre (title role in Zemlinsky's Der Zwerg), Grand Théâtre de Genève (Mime/Ring), the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, and the Bayreuth Festival.
He also has a close and long-standing relationship with the Finnish National Opera and is a welcome guest at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, where he sang the role of Kimmo in Sallinen's Kullervo, among others.

Karlström has worked with conductors such as Marc Albrecht, Ralf Weikert, Asher Fisch, Sakari Oramo, Patrick Fournillier, Ulf Schirmer and Christoph Gedschold as well as with directors such as Peter Sellars, Claus Guth, Robert Carsen and Francisco Negrín.

His concert repertoire includes key works by J.S. Bach and Handel, Mozart and Rossini, Beethoven and Orff.

As a member of the ensemble, Dan Karlström is back on stage of the Leipzig Opera in the 2024/25 season in numerous roles, such as Chekalinsky in the new production of The Queen of Spades, Mime/Ring, Spoletta/Tosca, Hexe/Hansel and Gretel, Roderigo/Otello, and Goro/Madama Butterfly, Monostatos/The Magic Flute and Steuermann/The Flying Dutchman.

In addition to his work in Leipzig, he will return to Opera Halle as Hoffmann in the revival of Les contes d’Hoffmann and appear as Piet the Pot in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre at Palermo’s Teatro Massimo, as 4th Jew/Salome at Naples’ Teatro di San Carlo and in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Pori, Finland.
