Biography

The Finnish tenor Dan Karlström graduated from the Business School of Åbo Academy before starting his singing studies at the Sibelius-Academy with Anssi Hirvonen in Helsinki. He has since then worked with Prof. Herbert Brauer in Berlin as well as visited master classes with Jaakko Ryhänen, Tom Krause and Elisabeth Werres.
Following first ensemble contracts at  Schillertheater NRW and the Staatstheater Darmstadt, he is stable member of the ensemble of the Opera Leipzig since 2001, performing i.a. Mime/Der Ring des Nibelungen, Steuermann/Der fliegende Holländer, Luzio/Das Liebesverbot, Ginger Bread Witch/Hansel and Gretel, Monostatos/Die Zauberflöte, Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Prinz/Lulu, Spoletta/Tosca, Pong/Turandot, Goro/Madama Butterfly, and Hunter/Rusalka.

In addition, his broad repertoire includes numerous parts out of Opera, Operetta and Musical, including David/Die Meistersinger, Walter von der Vogelweide/Tannhäuser, Truffaldino/The Love for Three Oranges, Tamino/Die Zauberflöte, Cassio/Otello, and Judas/Jesus Christ Superstar.

Guest engagements led him to renowned institutions, including the Dresden Semperoper (Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro), Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin (Spoletta/Tosca), Komische Oper Berlin, Theater Chemnitz (title role in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg), Grand Th´^atre de Genève (Mime/Ring), Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, as well as the Bayreuth festival.
He is carrying a close connection to the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, where he made his debut as Tobias in Sweeny Todd and since then sang roles, such as Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto and Dr. Miracle/Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Pedrillo/Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Yonas in Kaija Saariaho’s Adriana Mater. Furthermore, he is a welcome guest at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, where he performed in roles like Monostatos/Zauberflöte, Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Remendado/Carmen, Goro/Madama Butterfly, as well as Kimmo in Sallinen’s Kullervo.

His concert repertoire includes key works by J. S. Bach, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven, and Orff.
Dan Karlström collaborated with conductors, such as, Marc Albrecht, Ralf Weikert, Asher Fisch, Sakari Oramo, Patrick Fournillier, Ulf Schirmer, and Christoph Gedschold, and with directors like Peter Sellars, Claus Guth, Robert Carsen, and Francisco Negrín.

As an ensemble member, also in season 2019/20 Karlström will be on stage in numerous roles at Opera Leipzig, including Mime/Ring, Steuermann/Der fliegende Holländer, Ginger Bread Witch/Hansel and Gretel, Monostatos in the new production Die Zauberflöte, Remendado/Carmen, Spoletta/Tosca, Harry/La fanciulla del West, Gastone/La traviata, Kilian/Der Freischütz, as well as Priester und unvollkommener Engel in the new production of Ullmann’s Der Sturz des Antichrist.
In addition, he will sing Mime in the new production Das Rheingold under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, as well as Wirt/Der Rosenkavalier at Dresden’s Semperoper.
