Biography
Soprano Clara Kim, Korean name Hyoyoung Kim, received her bachelor's degree in singing from Seoul National University.The winner of the 2021 Metropolitan National Council Auditions was a fellow of the Toulmin Foundation and Seoul National University. Subsequently she graduated from the renowned New York Juilliard School with a Master of Music with Edith Wiens, where she also sang the role of Almirena in the production of Handel’s Rinaldo.Clara Kim has performed on several occasions in the Korean capital, Soul,at the Kukje Art Hall e.g. as a NYIOP candidate with the Hankyung Philharmonic Orchestra as well as in the Kumho Art Hall. In her native country, she gained recognition by winning the 24th Korean Broadcasting System Music Competition, and in 2020 she received the South Korean Minister of Culture Award.
In 2022 she completed her education with the Artist Diploma in Vocal Arts at the Royal College of Music in London.
Clara Kim has been a member of the Frankfurt Opera Studio since the 2022/23 season, where she has performed the roles of Queen of the Night/Pamina/Papagena in the opera The Magic Flute, as well as Norina/Don Pasquale, Sandman/Dewman in Hansel and Gretel, and also as Branghien in secular oratorio Le vin herbé by Frank Martin.
As part of the International Meistersinger Academy Neumarkt (IMA), she presented a Belcanto opera programme with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra as well as a song recital broadcast live by the Bavarian Radio. During the Tyrolean Winter Festival in Erl in 2023, she was celebrated for her portrayal of the Spring Beauty in Rimsky-Korsakov's rarely performed opera The snow Maiden. In the summer of 2024, she appeared in Finland in a staged performance of Handel's Messiah under the direction of Aapo Häkkinen with the Tapiola Sinfonietta.
In the 2024/25 season, Clara Kim will return to Oper Frankfurt as a guest, appearing in two premières: As Oberto in Handel's Alcina under the musical direction of Julia Jones, directed by Johannes Erath, and as the First Flower Girl (Group 1) in Wagner's Parsifal under Thomas Guggeis and directed by Brigitte Fassbaender.
