Biography

Austrian-New Zealand bass Anthony Robin Schneider is a versatile artist with a flexible, powerful yet velvety voice, distinguished by his combination of musicality and expression in the opera and concert repertoire of all eras, with a particular affinity for Mozart, Wagner and Verdi.

From 2019 to 2024, Schneider was a member of the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt, where he impressed audiences in roles such as the title role in Barry Kosky's production of Hercules (Handel), King Henry (Lohengrin), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), the Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlo) and Sparafucile (Rigoletto).

From 2021 to 2024, Schneider was a guest in Brigitte Fassbaender's highly acclaimed production of Wagner's Ring at the Tyrolean Festival in Erl, where he sang the roles of Fafner (Das Rheingold, Siegfried) and Hunding (Die Walküre) under the musical direction of Erik Nielsen. In the summer of 2023, he also sang Bruckner's Te Deum and Rossini's Stabat Mater in Erl.

In addition to his permanent engagement at Oper Frankfurt, Anthony Robin Schneider has made two house debuts in recent seasons, as Fafner (Das Rheingold) at the Staatstheater Braunschweig and as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) at the Semperoper Dresden. He also sang this role at the Houston Grand Opera and the Komische Oper Berlin.
He also appeared as King Henry the Fowler (Lohengrin) in a new production by Christof Loy at the Nationale Opera in Amsterdam under the musical direction of Lorenzo Viotti and as Orest (Elektra) with the Berlin Philharmonic under the musical direction of Kirill Petrenko in Baden-Baden and Berlin.
Other guest appearances include the Ghost of Hector (Les Troyens) in David McVicar's production at the Vienna State Opera, Truffaldino (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Santa Fe Opera and with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Doctor (Wozzeck) in Toronto with the Canadian Opera Company, and Peter Eötvös' Tri Sestri at the Salzburg Festival.

His concert repertoire also includes Mozart's Requiem (Cleveland Orchestra), Beethoven's 9th Symphony (hr-Sinfonieorchester 2022, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra 2018 and 2019), Handel's Messiah (Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Santa Cecilia), Haydn's Creation (Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra), Verdi's Requiem (Concertgebouw, under Lorenzo Viotti).

In the 2025/26 season, Anthony Robin Schneider will take on the role of Méphistophélès in Gounod's Faust at the Concertgebouw, Sarastro/The Magic Flute at the Semperoper Dresden and the Theater Basel, and Bartolo/Le nozze di Figaro at the Dutch National Opera.
In the concert field, he can be heard as Tiresias/Oedipus Rex at the Teatro Comunale Bolzano, as well as in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Orchestra of the Staatskapelle Halle and the Konzertchor Leipzig in Pisa, in Rossini's Stabat Mater with the Monteverdi Choir Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique in London and later in the Verdi Requiem as part of the Dresden Music Festival.

Spectacular start to the season

The young bass singer can look forward to a spectacular start to the season:
On the 10th and 13th of September, he will be heard as Sarastro at the Semperoper in Dresden under Killian Farrell, before singing in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis under Hartmut Haenchen in Pisa on September 25th during a guest performance by the Staatskapelle Halle. Immediately afterwards, he will travel to London to perform Rossini's Stabat Mater with the Monteverdi Choir Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique under Jakob Lehmann on October 2nd. He will conclude the late summer with concerts from October 7th as Tiresias in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex at the Teatro Comunale Bolzano under Donato Renzetti.

We are delighted to now also be able to represent Anthony Robin Schneider in general management. Anthony has already caught people's attention with engagements at the Oper Frankfurt, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Semperoper Dresden, the Santa Fe Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, the Tiroler Erl Festspiele and in concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, among others. In the upcoming seasons he will make his debut in important roles at the Salzburg Festival, the Canadian Opera Toronto, the Komische Oper Berlin and return to the Oper Frankfurt, the National Opera Amsterdam and this summer to the Tiroler Festspiele in Erl!
