Jörg Halubek is a conductor, harpsichordist and organist and is one of the leading interpreters of historically informed performance practice. His artistic work combines an in-depth engagement with sources and historically authentic sound with a direct, dramaturgically precise musical language. His profile has been shaped in particular by his long-standing collaboration with Nationaltheater Mannheim, where he is directing a major Monteverdi cycle. As Professor of Historical Keyboard Instruments at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart, founder and Artistic Director of il Gusto Barocco, and Artistic Director of the Internationale Händel-Akademie Karlsruhe, he brings together artistic practice, research and education.

In the 2026/27 season, Jörg Halubek continues his important artistic partnerships. At Nationaltheater Mannheim, he returns with Grétry’s Zemira e Azor as part of the Schwetzinger Festspiele. At the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, he will conduct Jacopo Peri’s La Dafne with il Gusto Barocco and take part in further festival projects. At Luzerner Theater, he will conduct Joseph Martin Kraus’ Proserpina. With his ensemble il Gusto Barocco, he will also continue a Baroque opera project in Stuttgart with Agostino Steffani’s Henrico Leone.

The 2025/26 season focused on the continuation of his long-standing engagement with Claudio Monteverdi’s music theatre. With L’Orfeo at the Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele, Jörg Halubek, together with il Gusto Barocco, continued the major Monteverdi cycle at Nationaltheater Mannheim, which began with Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and was further developed through L’incoronazione di Poppea and other projects. At Theater Basel, he conducted Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in Simon McBurney’s production. At Luzerner Theater, he continued his previous collaboration with a double bill of Luigi Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero and Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Requiem. At the Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele, he also presented Johann Christian Bach’s staged cantata Amor vincitore.

In 2008, Jörg Halubek founded the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra il Gusto Barocco, with which he has presented its own Baroque series in Stuttgart since 2020. Together, they are dedicated to rediscovering and performing rarely heard operas and works. Their recordings include Cleofida, Königin von Indien in Georg Philipp Telemann’s arrangement of Handel’s Poro, Monteverdi’s Marienvesper, Johann David Heinichen’s Flavio Crispo, Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello’s Tisbe, the world premiere recording of Johann Sigismund Kusser’s Adonis, an orchestrated version of Bach’s Kunst der Fuge, as well as Antonio Bembo’s L’Ercole amante. Adonis received its first staged performance at the Rokokotheater Schwetzingen in November 2024, following its release earlier that year.

As an opera conductor, Jörg Halubek has appeared as a guest at renowned opera houses and festivals including Komische Oper Berlin, Staatstheater Kassel, the Händel-Festspiele Halle and the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik. His artistic collaborators include directors such as Harry Kupfer, Calixto Bieito, Lorenzo Fioroni, Markus Bothe, Stephan Müller and Jochen Biganzoli.

Jörg Halubek is also internationally recognized as a harpsichordist and organist. Since winning the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition Leipzig in 2004, he has performed as a soloist in Germany and abroad. Since 2019, through his multimedia project Bach Organ Landscapes, he has been dedicated to recording Bach’s complete organ works on historical instruments and at original locations.

Jörg Halubek studied church music, organ and harpsichord in Stuttgart and Freiburg, and deepened his knowledge of historically informed performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Jesper Christensen and Andrea Marcon.
