The young Finn Johan Krogius is considered one of the most interesting lyric tenors of the present day. Accordingly, his debut as Walther in the premiere of Tannhäuser at Oper Zürich in the summer of 2026 was enthusiastically celebrated by audiences and the press: “Johan Krogius delivered a brilliant tenor performance of beautiful singing as Walther von der Vogelweide: […] a great promise for the future of the young Finnish singer” (Der Opernfreund).
In the 2026/27 season, Krogius will once again be heard at the Dresdner Semperoper as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, as well as at the Berliner Staatsoper, where he will also make his debut as Narraboth in Salome. At Opernhaus Zürich, he will likewise sing Tamino, alongside further roles such as Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Walther von der Vogelweide in Tannhäuser, the Mad Hatter in Alice im Wunderland, Froh in Das Rheingold, and Trin in the new production of La fanciulla del west. He will also take on the role of Froh as part of Opernhaus Zürich’s RING guest performance at the Philharmonie de Paris and at Carnegie Hall in New York. In summer 2027, he will return to the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Tamino. On the concert platform, he can also be heard, among other engagements, as a soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the New Year’s Eve concert of the Bamberger Symphoniker.
Since the 2025/26 season, Johan Krogius has been a permanent ensemble member of Opernhaus Zürich, where in his first season he made his debuts as Walther von der Vogelweide in Tannhäuser and Count Elemer in Arabella, as well as Spoletta in Tosca, and was also seen as the Innkeeper and the Major-Domo of the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier. During the season, he also made his successful debut as Lohengrin in two concert performances with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra under Tarmo Peltokoski, an achievement that gives great reason to look forward to the future. He also returned to the Dresdner Semperoper as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and to the Berliner Staatsoper as Streshnev in Chowanschtschina.
During the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, he was a member of the International Opera Studio of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and has regularly appeared there as a guest ever since. His sung roles at the Staatsoper include, among others, Leukippos in Strauss’s Daphne, Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette, Streshnev in Chowanschtschina, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, the Innkeeper and Major-Domo at Faninal’s in Der Rosenkavalier, the Apparition of a Young Man in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Parpignol in La Bohème, and First Knight of the Grail in Parsifal.
Further highlights on the opera stage have included Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Jaquino in Fidelio, and Pong in Turandot in Helsinki; Juhana in Joonas Kokkonen’s „The Last Temptations“ at Oper Tampere; Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at the Dresdner Semperoper, Oper Tampere, and the Savonlinna Opera Festival, where in 2024 he was also seen as Don Ottavio and Ismaele in Nabucco, and in 2025, for the first time, as Macduff in Macbeth and once again as Juhana in The Last Temptations.
In the concert field, Krogius has worked, among others, with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, most recently in summer 2024 as Kuska in a semi-staged version of Chowanschtschina under Esa-Pekka Salonen; the Jyväskylä Sinfonia, the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester, as well as the Orchestra La Scintilla and the Zürcher Sing-Akademie.
Johan Krogius began his musical training as a boy soprano soloist and later studied in Helsinki and Stockholm. In 2021, he won the Timo Mustakallio Singing Competition and, in the same year, was awarded first prize at the Helsinki Lied Competition.
