Finnish bass-baritone, Tuomas Pursio, studied singing at the Sibelius Academy in his natal Helsinki before continuing his studies at the International Opera Studio in Zurich. His teachers include Jukka Rasilainen, Laszlo Polgar, Tom Krause, and Elisabeth Werres.

Following steady engagements in Düsseldorf and Erfurt, Pursio remains a member of ensemble at the Opera Leipzig since 2002/03.

His concert repertoire comprises works such as Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and 9th Symphony, Haydn’s Schöpfung, Mahler’s 8th Symphony, and the Passions by Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as various lesser known works. He could be heard in the highly acclaimed series of concerts by the Berliner Rundfunksinfonieorchester with concertante Wagner operas as 2nd Gralsritter in “Parsifal” and as Fritz Kothner in “Meistersinger” under Marek Janowski, as well as in Verdi’s “Requiem” in Leipzig.

Guest engagements led him to the Staatsoper Berlin as well as to Stuttgart, Hannover, Zurich, Budapest, Antwerp, Helsinki, Lausanne, Wiesbaden, Nice, Bremen, Heidelberg, Augsburg, Bielefeld, and to the Savonlinna Opera Festival and Festival Auvers-sur-Oise. At these houses he performed such roles as Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro, Escamillo/Carmen, King/Aida, Carlo Belmonte/Margherita d'Anjou, Publio/La clemenza di Tito, Musiklehrer/Ariadne auf Naxos, Leporello/Don Giovanni, Rambaldo/La Rondine, Kaspar/Der Freischütz, Orest/Elektra, Wurm/Luisa Miller, Amfortas/Parsifal, Förster/Füchslein, Don Alfonso/Cosi fan tutte, Nick Shadow/The Rake’s Progress, Scarpia/Tosca, Wotan/Rheingold as well as The Four Villains in The Tales of Hoffmann.

Particular highlights were the guest performances by Opera Leipzig in Bayreuth as Friedrich/Das Liebesverbot and Raimondo/Rienzi, the latter under the baton of Christian Thielemann. Moreover, Pursio sang the role of Friedrich in the same production at Teatro Verdi in Trieste as well.

Tuomas Pursio worked with renowned conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Philippe Jordan, Riccardo Frizza, John Fiore, Nello Santi, Adam Fischer, Ralf Weikert, Ulf Schirmer, Axel Kober, Osmo Vänskä, Sebastian Weigle, and Marcello Viotti.

His CD-recordings include Schumann’s Manfred with Mario Venzago, Un Ballo in Maschera with Riccardo Chailly, and Meistersinger von Nürnberg with Marek Janowski.

Most recently, Tuomas Pursio was on stage at Landestheater Linz as Jochanaan/Salome as well as at Opera Leipzig in his signature roles Mephisto/Faust, Gunther/Götterdämmerung, and Zaccaria/Nabucco.

In the season 2017/18, Tuomas Pursio will as an ensemble member once again be taking on great roles in numerous productions at Opera Leipzig: Wotan/Rheingold, Alberich/Siegfried and Gunther/Götterdämmerung under Ulf Schirmer, Amfortas/Parsifal, Scarpia/Tosca, Jochanaan/Salome, Kaspar/Freischütz, and Water Goblin/Rusalka. Moreover, he will make his debut in the title role of Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle.

Finnish triple power in Tampere
With Virpi Räisänen, Tuomas Katajala and Tuomas Pursio, the cast for the world premiere of Olli Kortekangas' Veljeni Vartija (My Brother’s Keeper) counts no less than three of our artists. The opera tells the story of a family in Finland in the year 1918, a year that was marked by the civil war and was one of the most dramatic of the then young nation. Under the baton of Santtu-Matias Rouvali the three can be heard on the following dates: 16th/18th/21st and 24th of February and 1st/3rd of March.
Into the new year with Wagner
For Tuomas Pursio, the celebrated premiere of Rusalka at Opera Leipzig on December 3rd (further performance dates: March 04th and June 1st) will be followed by only a short Christmas break, before the new year opens with Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen. Starting January 06th he can be seen and heard as Wotan/Das Rheingold, from January 13th as Alberich/Siegfried, and from January 14th as Gunther in Götterdämmerung. Conducting the production by Rosamund Gilmore is Ulf Schirmer, and with Pursio on stage are fellow BOM artists Rúni Brattaberg and Dan Karlström.
