Biography

Franziska Gottwald continues her engagements as guest artist at various European opera houses with performances as Sesto in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito at Staatstheater Hannover and as Zaida in Rossinis Opera Il Turco in Italia in Toulouse. In the opera seasons of 2014-16 she was engaged as guest soloist in several productions at Staatstheater Wiesbaden where she appeared as Ruggiero in Alcina by Handel, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Hänsel in Hänsel and Gretel and for the first time as Orfeo in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice.
Franziska Gottwald’s other role debuts include Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus at Staatstheater Stuttgart, as Sesto at Oper Köln (Cologne) and in the title role of Handel’s Ariodante in Basel, where she was already well known as Cherubino, and as Alcina in Vivaldi's Orlando furioso. At the International Göttingen Handel Festival she has appeared as Erissena in Poro and Irene in Tamerlano. Her performances in the productions of Galuppi's L'Olimpiade (Licida) in Venice and Vivaldi's Motezuma (Fernando) in Bilbao have been released on DVD.

Franziska Gottwald’s concert appearances on four continents have cemented her international reputation as a guest soloist. Her repertoire includes orchestral pieces such as Mahlers 4th Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde, Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Été, Verdi's Requiem, Les Proses Lyriques by Debussy, the Biblical Songs by Dvorak and many others. She has been the featured soloist on aria evenings with orchestras at international festivals, with performances at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. Franziska Gottwald performs with many different outstanding orchestras including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Venice Baroque Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Musica Antiqua Köln, Akademie für Alte Musik, Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig and the Bamberger Symphoniker.

Frequent work with conductors such as Reinhard Goebel, Ton Koopman, Andrea Marcon, Fabio Biondi and others, has solidified Franziska Gottwald’s reputation as an expert in historical performance practice. Further acknowledgement of her accomplishments came from her winning the 1st Prize at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig.

Her recent CD releases include Vivaldi’s Merope with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante and L'Olimpiade: The Opera with Markellos Chryssicos and the Venice Baroque Orchestra. Also of note are the recordings of Handel's Samson with Nicolas McGegan, the ECHO award winning recording of Mendelssohns' Elias and Salieri 's La Passione with Christoph Spering and the complete Brahms duets with Letizia Scherrer and Ferenc Bognar. Additionally she appears on several of the Edison Award-winning recordings of the complete Cantatas of J. S. Bach by Ton Koopman and the release of Bach Cantates L'Èpiphanie with the Orchestra Montréal Baroque under Eric Milnes.
