The Dutch bass Dennis Wilgenhof studied with James McCray and Prizrenka Petkovic. He currently coaches with Neumar Starling.
While working as a renowned speech-coach for actors at the theatre academy in Maastricht for many years, Dennis Wilgenhof made his operatic debut at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in Peter-Jan Wagemans’ opera Legende (live broadcasted world premiere) and also performed Leone/Attila, Caliban (Frank Martin’s Der Sturm, recorded on Hyperion) and 2nd Soldier/Salomé, among others (all at NTR Zaterdagmatinee, Concertgebouw Amsterdam).
As a member of the soloists ensemble of Opera Cologne since 2009, Dennis Wilgenhof performed several roles including Osmin/Entführung aus dem Serail, Sparafucile/Rigoletto, Doctor/Wozzeck, Il Commendatore/Don Giovanni, Hans Foltz, Hans Schwartz, and Nachtwächter/Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Zuniga/Carmen, A Monk/Don Carlo, Don Toribio (Peter Eötvös' Love & Other Demons), Dreieinigkeitsmoses/Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, and Dottore Grenvil/La Traviata.
He has been a guest at several opera houses and companies including roles as 2nd Geharnischter in Die Zauberflöte (Opera Frankfurt, Conductor: Sebastian Weigle), Qin Shi Huangdi in the world premiere of Willem Jeths’ Hôtel de Pékin (Nationale Reisopera and Concertgebouw Amsterdam), Hunding in Walküre (St. Etienne and Den Haag), Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni (Beijing), Vierter Brabantischer Edler in Lohengrin (Salle Pleyel, Paris), and his debut at the Dutch National Opera as Zamar in Legende.
Since the season 2012/13, Dennis Wilgenhof is an ensemble member at Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden where he sings roles like Ramphis/Aida, Kecal/Verkaufte Braut, Doctor/Wozzeck, Alaska Wolf Joe/Mahagonny, Sarastro/Zauberflöte, King/L’amour des trois Oranges, and Padre Guardiano/La Forza del Destino.
In the summer of 2014, he guested at the Dutch National Opera in the role of Yuri Gagarin in the world premiere of Martijn Padding’s new opera Laika, and in the spring of 2015, his debut at Teatro alla Scala followed, in the world premiere of Battistelli’s CO2.
More recent projects include his return to the Scala di Milano as Notar/Der Rosenkavalier by Harry Kupfer (Conductor: Zubin Mehta) as well as the roles of Jacobus d'Arc in Braunfel’s Jeanne d'Arc, Titurel in Parsifal at the Opera Cologne, and Hans Foltz/Meistersinger at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
In the current season, Wilgenhof will perform the Bonze (Madama Butterfly) at the Staatsoper Berlin, in Candide at the Cologne Opera, as well as take on the role of Hans Schwartz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Teatro alla Scala.
