Biography

Born 1973 in Minneapolis, Minnesota (USA), Corby Welch studied at the University of Minnesota with Lawrence Weller and completed his studies with Rudolf Piernay in Germany at the Hochschule für Musik Mannheim.
 
Important appearances followed as Pedrillo/Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Brighella/Ariadne auf Naxos at the Hamburg State Opera and at the Aalto Theater Essen, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, in Modena, and Ferarra, Orfeo/L´Anima del Filosofo (J. Haydn) at the Schwetzingen Festival, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Schleswig Holstein Festival, and Rheingau Musik Festival, Nemorino/L’elisir d’amore at the Ludwigsburg Festival, Lucarnio/Ariodante at the Nederlandse Reisopera, and Telemaco/Telemaco (A. Scarlatti) at the Schwetzingen Festival.
                                                 
Since 2003 Corby Welch is a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf where he sings major roles of the lyric repertoire such as Belmonte/Entführung a. d. Serail, Tamino/Zauberflöte, Don Ottavio/Don Giovanni, Tito/La Clemenza di Tito, Prince/Rusalka, and Flamand/Capriccio.
 
Concert and operatic engagements brought him in collaboration with conductors such as Kent Nagano, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Semyon Bychkov, Marek Janowski, Eije Oue, Michael Schoenwandt, John Mauceri, Zoltán Peskó, Helmuth Rilling, Thomas Hengelbrock, Frieder Bernius, Alessandro De Marchi, Daniel Reuss, Christoph Spering and orchestras and ensembles such as Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Hannover Radio Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Berlin Radio Orchestra (RSB), Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, International Bach Academy, RIAS Kammerchor, Balthasar- Neumann- Ensemble, Das Neue Orchester, Kammerchor Stuttgart, and Tölzer Knabenchor.
 
Specialties of his vast concert repertoire are in the works of Beethoven (9th Symphony and Missa Solemnis) as well as the Passions by J.S. Bach, in the Händel Oratories and in contemporary composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Wolfgang Rhim. His concerts brought him to France, Italy, the Europäische Musikfest in Stuttgart, and the Oregon Bach Festival.
 
Recently, he sang the War Requiem at the Staatstheater Kassel followed by the Elijah in Bremen (Glocke), Paulus in Milan, the St. Johns Passion with the Bachchor Gütersloh, the St Matthews’ Passion with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Mahler’s Lied von der Erde in Siegen (Germany) and Don José in a concert version of Carmen in Solingen (Germany). Also, he appeared in a world premiere with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart at the prestigious music festival for contemporary music Eclat-Festival in Stuttgart.
 
Since 2011, Corby Welch has established himself as one of the promising new dramatic tenors singing Erik/Der fliegende Holländer in Düsseldorf, Liège and Braunschweig, Eine florentinische Tragödie in Düsseldorf, Die Entführung aus dem Serail in Essen, Lohengrin in Duisburg and in Magdeburg, Siegmund in Düsseldorf and Weimar and making his debut as Loge in Das Rheingold in Geneva.
 
In 2016, he sang the title role in William Bolcom’s McTeague at the Landestheater Linz with great success, and in the season of 2016/17 he will, yet again, take on the roles of Erik/Der fliegende Holländer and Bacchus/Ariadne auf Naxos at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. This December he will be going to München to sing in Der Ring an einem Abend (Wagner/Loriot).
